The Wolf Pack

Newsome Girls Soccer is on the Hunt for a State Championship

No, this is not a fever dream. Newsome High School just seems to produce soccer champions at an alarming rate. Maybe it’s in the water. Maybe there’s a lab hidden somewhere in the woods. Whatever it is, keep doing it.

After barely breaking a sweat during the regular season, Newsome Girls Soccer took the spirit of their mascot to heart and rallied the pack. A loss to Sumner in districts lit a fire that doesn’t look like it’s burning out anytime soon.

The team quickly regrouped and stormed through the regional quarterfinal with an 8-0 victory over Venice. The semifinal proved to be a bit tougher, but these ladies still found a way, defeating a strong Riverview Sarasota squad 3-2.

And when the bright lights came on at the big stage, the Newsome girls didn’t flinch. They handled business against Alonso with a 4-1 win, officially crowning them Regional Champions.

Now the pack is still on the hunt, with their sights set firmly on a State Championship. The semifinals will pit them against No. 2 seed Cypress Bay on Tuesday, the 24th at Spec Martin Stadium in DeLand.

I’m not much of a betting man, but my money’s on these ladies going all the way. Godspeed and good luck. You’ve got the city behind you.

Newsome Boys Soccer Ends Their Historic Regional Championship Run

What began as a dream ended under the bright lights in cinematic movie fashion.

Newsome High School’s boys soccer team has been putting on a show all season worthy of Messi-level fanfare. The Wolves finished the regular season with only 2 losses and one tie. They then went on to dominate district play with back-to-back shutouts, scoring a total of 15 goals on their way to a district championship.

But these boys weren’t done yet.

Regional quarterfinals? No problem. A 3-0 victory over local rival Riverview quickly put any delusions of a short postseason run to bed. Regional semifinals? A little tighter, but the Wolves DO NOT give up goals. They triumphed over North Port 1-0 and earned their spot on the regional championship stage.

Last night, Newsome faced one of the top teams in the nation in Palm Harbor University. And the battle did not disappoint. At the end of regulation and extra time, the score was locked at 1-1.

Which meant this contest would be decided the only way a historic run like theirs should be. Penalty kicks.

The ending was popcorn-worthy. A nail-biting back and forth that could have gone either way. In the end, Newsome would fall 7-6 in PKs to Palm Harbor.

While I’m sure this falls short of what the team wanted, their journey is inspiring nonetheless. A story of teamwork, hard work, and overcoming obstacles like injuries and packed schedules.

From all of us at The Brandon Buzz, congratulations to Newsome Boys Soccer. This is a season the city will not forget.
