Same Game, New Rules

It goes without saying that I am not an attorney, and nothing I utter should be construed as legal advice. But I have played one on TV. Good luck finding that episode.

That disclaimer was simply a prelude to our rundown of a few of the Florida laws that take effect today, October 1. This list is not comprehensive, and if you need clarification, we urge you to seek legal advice. I promise you, “The Brandon Buzz told me” will not get you out of legal trouble, but it’ll probably get you a free pizza and maybe an extra scoop of chicken somewhere. Here goes.

Flood disclosure: This one makes the top of the list because of last year. If you are renting or buying, the owners must now make you aware of potential flood risks, prior flooding, as well as any damage.
(Translation: if the living room once required a canoe, they have to say so.)

Paw Patrol (we gave it that name): This is also likely due to last year. But aside from being just plain old cruel, you will now face criminal penalties should you choose to leave or abandon your furry companion outside during a natural disaster.

Tristan Murphy Act – More funding for programs focused on diverting individuals with mental health issues away from the criminal justice system.
(Because a treatment plan beats a court date, every time.)

UFO Control – Changes to where you can fly drones, updated definitions, and increased penalties if you fly them in the wrong place.

That’s a no-no: I’m always confused when laws are passed making illegal things more illegal. But if you had a desire to attack a utility worker, just know that you will face stiffer penalties. If that was part of your decision tree.

If you want to see all of the changing laws and read them in more detail, you can find that HERE.
(Check official state resources or ask an actual attorney. We’re more about jokes, not jurisprudence.)

Estate Planning is For Your Life

Debbie Baker on Estate Planning

One reason people don’t do end-of-life planning is they think that when they plan, they’ll die soon. Well, that could happen, but it’s usually very improbable. When done the right way with someone who listens, empathizes, and keeps the mood light, you can create an estate plan that makes your life better.

The Bloomingdale Merge Roulette

No less than 4 days a week I travel down I-75 North and get off onto US 301 South to head east on Bloomingdale Ave. And no less than 4 days a week I run the highway merge roulette.

Depending on the time, your mileage may vary, but if you’ve ever tried to exit the interstate, merge onto 301, and cross 4 lanes within about 100 yards during rush hour, you know my pain. This is seriously the stuff nightmares are made of.

After my last attempt, I’ve come to the conclusion that this is the worst off-ramp on earth. (Unlikely, but it is to me.) I’ve never been the biggest fan of the Evel Knievel–inspired intersections sprinkled all over Hillsborough County, but this specific piece of roadway was made to test us all.

I can’t be alone in this. Let me know your experience, and if any worse intersections are lurking around Brandon. Shoot us an email at [email protected]
