Starting in November, the powers-that-be will kick off a gargantuan water-pipeline project in southern Hillsborough County. Think of it like giving our region a giant straw—only instead of sipping a smoothie, it's hauling up to 65 million gallons of drinking water a day. Yes, that’s with a million.

This pipeline will stretch about 26 miles, slinking its way from the Brandon water treatment plant down toward Lithia — and eventually reaching Balm if Mother Nature and engineers cooperate. Given how fast folks have been moving into these parts, it’s apparently needed.

You know how whenever “infrastructure” is mentioned, your inner GPS dies a little? That’s about to come true in real life.

• Crews will start by boring underneath major obstacles: the CSX railway, State Road 60, even the Alafia River itself.

• Surface work (read: digging, lane closures, detours, general chaos) kicks off in Spring 2026.

• Multiple work crews will be out simultaneously in different areas, so whether your commute is five minutes or 50, expect surprises.

• The finish line? November 2028. Yes, this is a long haul.

At the end of the day, we’re getting a massive, under-the-surface makeover. It’s messy. It’s long. It will break your heart (or at least your timing). But the aim is to have a water system to handle all the new rooftops, lawns, and questionable sprinklers.

So keep your ears peeled, your patience stocked, and maybe always leave a little earlier than you think, because let’s be honest, roads love to surprise us these days.

Starting Monday, federal employees can call in for help and stock up on essentials. It’s proof that while D.C. stalls, Tampa Bay shows up. Volunteers and donations are welcome because kindness, thankfully, isn’t subject to a shutdown.
