The State Gets Back to Work
Property taxes and the state budget take center stage in Tallahassee

If you own a home in Brandon, Valrico, or anywhere around eastern Hillsborough County, this is one of those Tallahassee conversations worth paying attention to. Florida lawmakers are heading into the 2026 legislative session with property taxes and the state budget front and center, and whatever decisions come out of it are likely to land right on our doorsteps.
On paper, property tax relief sounds like a win. Lower bills, more breathing room, and maybe a little less frustration when that annual notice shows up. But here’s the part that hits close to home. Property taxes help fund local services that Brandon residents rely on every day, from schools and parks to fire rescue and road maintenance. When those dollars change, local governments have to make up the difference somehow, and that can mean cuts, new fees, or shifting costs elsewhere.
The proposed state budget also includes funding priorities like education and infrastructure, which matter in a fast-growing area like Brandon, where traffic, classrooms, and public services are already feeling the strain. As more people move into the area, how the state balances tax relief with local funding will shape how well our community keeps up.
This session is just getting started, and nothing is finalized yet. But for homeowners, renters, and local businesses alike, these discussions could affect everything from monthly expenses to the quality of services we see close to home.
We’ll keep an eye on how this plays out and what it means specifically for Brandon and the surrounding area. Because decisions made hours away have a funny way of showing up right here.

I Guess We Do Have Flying Cars
A New Air Taxi Service Promises to Catapult Florida Into the Future

If someone told you a few years ago that Florida traffic might eventually have a vertical option, you probably would have laughed and gone back to refreshing your GPS. Yet here we are. State planners are seriously working toward a flying taxi service along the I-4 corridor, with talk of launches as early as 2026. Yes, the same I-4 Brandon drivers know as a test of patience may soon have an aerial escape route.
The concept is pretty wild. Instead of sitting in bumper-to-bumper traffic between Tampa and Orlando, some travelers could hop into small electric aircraft that lift straight up, cruise over congestion, and drop back down at designated landing spots. No on-ramps. No brake lights. Just a very different way to be late.
That said, let’s be clear. This is not something most of us are lining up for on day one. Early adoption is a brave hobby, and this feels like a situation where it’s perfectly acceptable to let someone else be the first to try it. We will be watching safely from the ground, reading reviews, and waiting for phrases like “proven,” “reliable,” and “nothing exciting happened” to become part of the conversation.
There are still plenty of unknowns, from cost to access to how weather will factor in, because Florida weather has never been known for cooperating. But the fact that this is moving from science fiction into actual planning says a lot about where transportation is headed.
For now, Brandon traffic is still very much a ground-level experience. But the next time you’re crawling along I-4 and catch yourself staring into the sky, just remember, one day that might actually be an option. Just maybe not on our first try.
Slowly, Then All at Once
How Kuma Plumbing helps Brandon homeowners avoid plumbing emergencies
Most plumbing emergencies don’t start as emergencies.
They usually begin as a slow drain that clears itself, a toilet that runs a little longer than it should, or a water bill that quietly creeps up without explanation.
Local plumbers tell us many of the biggest and most expensive problems they’re called out for could have been avoided if someone caught them just a little earlier. Florida homes deal with hard water, aging pipes, and heavy daily use, and small issues have a habit of hiding until they suddenly demand your full attention at the worst possible time.
That’s why preventative plumbing checks matter more than most homeowners realize. Spotting minor leaks, buildup, or pressure issues early can help prevent water damage, mold, and those surprise repair bills that never seem to come at a convenient moment.
Local partner Kuma Plumbing works with homeowners throughout the Brandon area to identify problems before they turn into full-blown emergencies. Their focus is on education and honest assessments, helping residents understand what’s happening behind the walls and under the floors, not just fixing things once they break.
If you’ve noticed slow drains, inconsistent water pressure, or anything that just feels off, it may be worth having a professional take a look sooner rather than later. Catching it early can save a lot of stress and a lot of water down the road.
