Measles Makes an Unwelcome Return
What confirmed cases in the Tampa Bay area mean for local residents

Measles is not something most of us expect to see in local headlines. It feels like one of those illnesses that belongs in history books. But here we are.
Health officials have confirmed measles cases in the Tampa Bay area, with additional cases reported elsewhere in Florida. This does not mean there’s an outbreak in Brandon, but it does mean measles is officially back on the radar.
Measles is highly contagious and spreads through coughing, sneezing, or simply sharing the same air with someone who’s infected. Symptoms often start with fever, cough, and a runny nose before a rash appears days later.
The reason this is getting attention is simple. Measles was once considered eliminated in the U.S. When cases pop up, it usually means the virus found an opening, often among unvaccinated or under vaccinated groups or through travel.
Health officials say the risk remains low for vaccinated individuals, but they’re urging people to check immunization records and pay attention to lingering symptoms.
This isn’t about panic. It’s about awareness.
Because measles is one of those things most of us assumed was gone for good. And apparently, it isn’t.

MOSI Gets a New Name and a New Direction
Museum of Science and Innovation announces expansion focused on hands-on learning

If you grew up going to MOSI, this one might make you do a double-take.
The Museum of Science and Industry is officially changing its name to the Museum of Science and Innovation. Same MOSI, new meaning. And along with the new name comes a big expansion focused on hands-on learning and future-focused skills.
The update reflects what MOSI has already been becoming over the last few years. Less about static exhibits and more about creativity, technology, and getting kids actively involved in how things work. Think coding, engineering, problem solving, and yes, still plenty of chances to press buttons and see what happens.
The expansion adds more space dedicated to STEAM learning, which blends science, technology, engineering, art, and math. That means more classrooms, more programs, and more opportunities for field trips, camps, and interactive experiences for students across the Tampa Bay area.
For families in Brandon, this is one of those changes that actually feels useful. A local institution is investing in education that goes beyond textbooks and worksheets and gives kids a chance to explore what they’re curious about.
The name may be new, but the goal is familiar. Spark curiosity, encourage learning, and help the next generation figure out what they might want to build, create, or discover next.
