So Long Street Murals

Over Labor Day weekend, crews began painting over street art across the region. New statewide rules require cities and counties to remove artwork on roads, crosswalks, and intersections in the name of uniformity and safety. That includes decorative school zone designs, neighborhood crosswalk art, and intersection murals.
You will see the change beyond Tampa. The directive applies countywide, so Brandon, Valrico, Riverview, and nearby areas will shift back to standard white markings if they have not already. If your school pickup route once had a bright crosswalk or a colorful “slow” reminder on the pavement, expect a simpler look the next time you pass through.
Schools are a key focus. Decorative school zone art is being replaced with traditional striping. The goal is consistency from driver to driver, but it also removes the extra color cues many parents say helped calm traffic. Please use extra caution at drop off and pick up while everyone adjusts.
Why it matters here
• Drivers: slow down, yield to pedestrians, and do not rely on color cues to spot crossings.
• Schools and PTAs: consider extra signage, safety cones, or volunteer crossing teams during busy times.
• Residents: if you spot faded or missing stripes, report the location so the county can restripe quickly.

Two Bucks and a Dream

I accepted a long time ago that I am not going to win the lottery. That is the case for nearly all of us, and yet here we are, standing in line at the gas station like it is a pilgrimage. Why? Because tonight’s Powerball is sitting at an eye-watering $1.3 billion, and our lizard brains hear that number and start designing outdoor kitchens. Tickets are two bucks, the drawing is tonight, and yes, you do need to buy before the cutoff.
Reality check time. The odds of winning the jackpot are roughly 1 in 292,201,338. That is fewer chances than the number of lovebugs on your windshield in May. You have better odds of a shark reading this paragraph over your shoulder. Still, someone eventually wins, which is exactly how the rest of us justify a quick stop for gas, snacks, and five sets of Quick Picks that all include our dog’s birthday.
Florida has had its moments. Ponte Vedra Beach and Land O’ Lakes both produced jackpot winners a few years back, so the sunshine is at least capable of shining on a Florida ticket again. Tonight’s prize is officially one of the largest ever, with a cash value around $589 million if you take the lump sum. At that point, your toughest decision becomes whether to tell your cousins you suddenly love them.
If you do play, remember the fine print your future yacht will not read. In Florida, you have to buy from an authorized retailer, and you need to make that purchase before the draw cutoff, which is 10:00 p.m. Eastern on Powerball nights. After that, your ticket is a very expensive bookmark for the next drawing.
Play for fun, not for rent money. And if by some cosmic clerical error a Brandon Buzz reader wakes up a billionaire tomorrow, please remember who told you to check the cutoff time. We accept tips in the form of sponsorships, scholarships, or an outdoor kitchen shaped like our logo.
