Empty Classrooms or Crowded Budgets
What the Schools of Hope expansion could mean for Hillsborough County public schools

Florida’s education debate just got a little louder, and this time it’s about what happens when charter schools move into public school space.
This week, Ron DeSantis weighed in publicly for the first time on the expanded Schools of Hope program, a law that allows certain charter schools to operate inside unused classrooms on public school campuses. Supporters call it expanding opportunity. Critics call it an unfunded headache.
The concern from school districts is simple. When a charter school moves into an existing campus, the district is still on the hook for things like transportation, meals, maintenance, and staffing support. That costs money, and districts say the law does not clearly spell out who pays for what.
The governor struck a calmer tone, saying the rollout should be reasonable and that charter operators should help cover some of the shared costs. He emphasized that co-locating schools should only happen where there is truly unused space and where it makes sense for students.
Locally, this matters because Hillsborough County schools already deal with crowding in some areas and tight budgets in others. The idea of “empty classrooms” is often more complicated than it sounds, especially when enrollment shifts year to year.
Supporters argue the program gives families more choices, especially in areas where schools have struggled academically. Opponents worry it could stretch resources thinner and blur the line between public and charter education.
For Brandon families, this is one of those Tallahassee decisions that feels abstract until it isn’t. How it’s implemented could affect everything from school resources to campus logistics. The conversation is far from over, and lawmakers are already signaling that changes or clarifications may be coming.
Like most education debates, the goal sounds good. The details are where things get interesting.

Winter Has Thoughts
Brandon’s cold spell sticks around, and your plants would like to come inside

Brandon woke up to another reminder that Florida winter is not here to play around. The cold that rolled through the Tampa Bay area overnight is sticking around for a few more days, which means this is no longer a one-night inconvenience. This is now a situation. Temperatures dropped low enough that farmers near Plant City spent the night protecting crops, watching thermometers like they were guarding a secret, and using ice as a survival tool because Florida science is undefeated.
Back in Brandon, residents are adjusting to the reality that this cold spell is not done yet. Porch plants are being invited inside for an extended stay. Ferns have officially moved in. Basil and rosemary are wrapped in towels and blankets like they are recovering from something traumatic. If your house suddenly smells like a greenhouse, that’s just seasonal survival. If a plant must remain outside, at least give it a jacket or whisper encouragement before you shut the door.
Pets are also being advised to rethink their outdoor ambitions. Dogs may want to stand outside and prove something, but they absolutely do not mean it. Sweaters are encouraged. Jackets are acceptable. Mild embarrassment is temporary. Cats should be allowed to nap aggressively in the warmest spot available and pretend they planned this cold front themselves.
Inside Brandon homes, thermostats are still under strict supervision. One degree changes only. Electric bills are being blamed for future crimes. Blankets continue to multiply on couches, and hot drinks remain a key part of the daily routine. Cold drinks are on hold until further notice.
With a few more chilly nights ahead, this is your sign to keep pets and plants inside a little longer or at least dress them for the occasion. Because while Brandon will be back to sunshine soon enough, winter has decided to linger just long enough to make sure everyone takes it seriously. Or at least complains about it properly. ☀️
