Bloomingdale Students Just Got a Law Passed. No Big Deal.

While most of us are still trying to figure out if takeout containers are recyclable, the students over at Bloomingdale High School were out here passing actual legislation.
Thanks to the Ought To Be a Law program—a real thing, not a sitcom title—Bloomingdale’s Student Government Association helped draft and pitch House Bill 295, a comprehensive waste reduction and recycling plan. The Florida Senate approved it. It’s real. It’s official. And yes, it came from high schoolers.
The program gives students a chance to pitch real solutions for real problems in their communities. Seven schools participated last fall. All seven had their proposals picked up by legislative delegates. But it was Bloomingdale’s take on improving recycling efforts that stood out and made it across the finish line.
Let’s just take a moment to appreciate this: while the rest of us were debating whether cardboard pizza boxes go in the trash or the recycling, these students were writing law. And winning.
It’s not just impressive. It’s a reminder that young people aren’t just the “future”—they’re already here, already leading, and already making change happen in very real ways. And if you need proof, look no further than Bill 295.
So next time you're tempted to underestimate the next generation, just remember—they're out here passing laws while you're still using the recycling bin as a second trash can.
Also, maybe go double-check what day recycling gets picked up. They’re making us all look bad.
