🌪️🏡 Breaking Ground in Brandon

Big news for Brandon! Habitat for Humanity, in partnership with Hillsborough County, officially kicked off the Windhorst Commons project on July 23, with 23 affordable, hurricane-ready homes going up at 205 W. Windhorst Road. These homes are designed for families earning at or below 80% of the area median income, offering stability and safety in the wake of past storms.

This development isn’t just about bricks and roofs, it’s about rebuilding lives. One future homeowner, having lost nearly everything during Hurricane Milton, will soon move into a specially designed, handicap-accessible home outfitted with hurricane shutters.

With $1.4 million invested in construction and $600,000 earmarked for infrastructure, Brandon is taking serious steps toward smart recovery and future resilience.

If you’d like to learn more or cover interviews at the groundbreaking, event coverage began at 10 a.m. on July 23, with opportunities to speak with future residents, community leaders, and Habitat team members.

🌧️ Progress Village Still Flooding, But Relief Is Finally Coming

Another storm, another flood in Progress Village.

Residents near Progress Blvd and S. 83rd Street are once again battling rising water—an all-too-familiar sight after heavy rains. Flooding here isn’t new, but many say it’s gotten worse since last summer’s storms. Sandbags, cones, blocked roads, it’s become a routine.

But help is coming. Hillsborough County has launched a $16 million drainage project that will bring new stormwater drains, water treatment areas, and roadway upgrades. The work is set to finish by early 2026.

Locals are hopeful, but also frustrated. They’re calling for quicker fixes like emergency drain cleanings and better alerts now, not just later.

Until then, residents will keep doing what they’ve always done: brace for rain and hope it doesn’t reach the front door.
