Rising E‑Bike Injuries Among Teens Hit Close to Home

If your teenager is zipping around on an e-bike or e-scooter, you’re not alone. These electric rides are everywhere in Brandon, Valrico, and Fishhawk—and so are the injuries.

Local doctors say they’re seeing more teens in the ER with serious trauma: broken bones, head injuries, even brain bleeds. These aren’t your typical scraped knees from falling off a regular bike. E-bikes can hit 20–30 mph, and many teens don’t wear helmets or fully understand the risks.

It’s not just the speed. Some kids are riding double, trying out tricks, or taking shortcuts through traffic-heavy areas. And it’s landing them in operating rooms with injuries normally seen in high-speed car crashes.

Here’s the good news: a little prevention goes a long way.

  • Helmets matter. Insist on one every time they ride.

  • Set speed and zone limits. Make sure your teen knows where—and how—it’s safe to ride.

  • Have the talk. One honest conversation could save them a hospital visit.

These rides aren’t going away. But if we treat them with the same caution we’d give a motorcycle or car, we can keep our kids safer—without taking the fun out of it.

Southshore’s growing fast. Let’s make sure our kids grow up safe right along with it.
