We Might Be One Step Closer to Meeting George Jetson

New electric air taxi infrastructure in Central Florida moves 30-minute Orlando-to-Tampa flights another step closer to reality

If you grew up watching The Jetsons, you probably assumed we'd all be commuting in flying cars by now. Instead, we got I-4. But believe it or not, we may have just taken another small step toward George Jetson's world.

A while back, we told you about electric air taxis that could someday shuttle passengers between Tampa and Orlando in about 30 minutes. While you're still not hailing one from your phone just yet, Florida has unveiled new infrastructure at Kissimmee Gateway Airport to help make that vision a reality.

The airport now has specialized fast-charging stations and other equipment designed to support future electric aircraft. Test flights are already taking place, and Florida continues investing in the technology, although there's still no official timeline for when passengers will be able to climb aboard.

Just imagine it. You're gliding over I-4 with a Dutch Bros coffee in one hand, a good book in the other, looking down at miles of brake lights while wondering why anyone still owns brake pads. The only traffic report you'd care about is whether there's another air taxi ahead of you.

Of course, we're not quite living in the Jetsons' neighborhood yet. Rosie the Robot isn't packing your lunch, your car probably still doesn't fly, and there's a decent chance you'll be sitting on I-4 again this weekend. Still, this is another sign that what once sounded like science fiction is slowly becoming engineering.

This Weekend's Forecast Is Very... Florida

Tropical moisture could bring periods of heavy rain and localized flooding to Brandon through Monday

You know it's a Florida forecast when there's just enough sunshine to convince you to wash the car... followed by just enough rain to make you wonder why you even bothered. That's the kind of weekend Brandon could be in for.

Forecasters are tracking a surge of tropical moisture expected to move into the Tampa Bay area from Friday through Monday, bringing rounds of heavy rain and tropical downpours. The good news is this isn't expected to develop into a named tropical storm or hurricane.

The bigger concern is slow-moving storms that could dump several inches of rain in a short period of time, leading to ponding on roads and localized flooding in low-lying areas. For Brandon, that means the weather could change in a hurry. One minute you'll be debating whether it's too hot to mow the lawn, and twenty minutes later you'll be watching patio furniture float toward the neighbor's yard.

If you've got youth sports, backyard cookouts, festivals, or other outdoor plans this weekend, it wouldn't hurt to keep one eye on the radar. Florida has a habit of turning a perfectly beautiful morning into an afternoon worthy of building an ark.

The silver lining? It probably won't rain all weekend. You'll likely have dry periods mixed in with the storms, so don't cancel your plans just yet. Just maybe leave the freshly washed car in the garage... and pack an umbrella anyway.

Buzz Worthy

Not every child experiences the world the same way, and that's exactly why organizations like Sensory Spaces of Tampa Bay matter.

Their mission is to create calming, inclusive sensory environments where children with autism, sensory processing differences, and other special needs can feel safe, supported, and free to explore at their own pace. While they're still preparing to launch, their goal is simple but meaningful: provide a place where families can access sensory-friendly experiences designed with their loved ones in mind.

We love highlighting organizations working to make our community more inclusive, and this is certainly one to keep an eye on.
