College Town Upgrades Right Around The Corner

USF finally looked at that old golf course off Fletcher and said, “We can do better than this.” So they’re turning it into the Fletcher District, a 138-acre mixed-use spot right next to campus that’s supposed to feel like its own little town. Think student housing, apartments, restaurants, shops, maybe a hotel and conference space, spots to study, spots to hang out, and green space so it doesn’t feel like a parking lot with Wi Fi. It’s all designed so students and faculty have more to do right there instead of driving all over Tampa.
They’re planning to start construction in 2026 and open the first part in 2028, which is fast in university time. USF’s whole point is to take land that wasn’t doing much and turn it into something that attracts people, money, and attention. And it will.
For folks in Brandon, anything that big in Tampa ripples out to us. More people working and studying there means more traffic on the routes we use, more demand for housing, more places to eat when you’re up that way, and more reasons for your kid to say, “Yeah, I want to go to USF.” It also shows that this region isn’t slowing down. Tampa is building up, and the suburbs, including Brandon, will feel it. So if you head north and see dirt moving where golf balls used to land, that’s not another strip mall. That’s USF getting ready for the next version of Tampa.

Holiday Travel Season is in Full Effect

Nothing says “welcome to the season” like a blinking departure board. Tampa International is gearing up for the holiday rush, but this year comes with a little extra chaos. Because of staffing issues at the federal level, airlines are trimming flights and slowing things down, which means travelers in our area are already seeing more delays and a handful of cancellations. It’s not a full-on airport meltdown, but it’s enough to turn a quick trip to Nashville into a four-hour airport picnic.
This lands right in the middle of real life. You’ve got kids coming home from college, grandparents flying in, people trying to sneak in one last work trip before everything shuts down, and suddenly the airline says, “Actually, you’re leaving tonight at 10 or tomorrow at 6 a.m.” So the move this year is to travel smart. Check your flight before you leave the house. Get to the airport early. Keep your phone on. And have a backup plan in case that perfect nonstop suddenly isn’t.
The good news is that most of these slowdowns are being phased in, not dropped out of the sky. So if you build in a little flexibility, you can still make it to Mom’s house, the in-laws, or that one cousin who cooks too much. The holidays are about getting home. This year, it may just take one more text, one more coffee, and maybe one more hour at TIA than you planned.
