Hockey Under the Florida Sky

Lightning and Bruins set for outdoor NHL game in Tampa

If you’re a hockey fan in Brandon, this one’s worth paying attention to.

The Lightning and Bruins are taking their rivalry outside for a special outdoor NHL game in Tampa. Yes, that means ice hockey under the Florida sky. It’s one of those moments that reminds you just how far hockey has come in this area.

On Sunday, February 1, at 6:30 p.m., the two teams will face off at Raymond James Stadium in what will be the first professional outdoor hockey game ever held here. Outdoor games are usually reserved for cold-weather cities with snowy backdrops. With overnight lows expected to dip into the 20s, Tampa just barely meets the requirements and is doing it its own way.

Fans are encouraged to arrive early to take part in pregame events and fan festivities, making this more than just a game. It’s a full experience.

For Lightning fans across Brandon, Valrico, and FishHawk, this feels like a milestone. Hockey isn’t just something we watch on TV anymore. It’s something this region shows up for. From packed watch parties to kids in local leagues, the fan base is real and growing.

Sure, fans up north might joke about playing hockey outdoors in Florida. But passion doesn’t come from the temperature. It comes from the people in the stands and the pride in the logo on the ice.

An outdoor Lightning versus Bruins game in Tampa is more than a novelty. It’s proof that hockey belongs here.

Gasparilla’s Pirates Are Taking a Shortcut This Year

Gasparilla Adjusts Its Plans Because Florida Weather, Obviously

Organizers of the Gasparilla Pirate Fest announced that strong winds and choppy waters expected Saturday have forced a change to this year’s pirate invasion route. Instead of the usual dramatic sail across Hillsborough Bay, the Jose Gasparilla II will launch closer to the Seddon Channel and head straight to the Tampa Convention Center before the parade begins downtown.

The decision was made with the Coast Guard and weather officials, all agreeing that fewer boats battling rough water is a good idea. The shorter route means less time on open water and a safer invasion overall. Some longtime Gasparilla fans are disappointed the classic entrance is being skipped, while others are still planning to show up in full pirate mode because let’s be honest, that part isn’t changing.

For Brandon readers planning to attend, this mostly affects timing and patience. A shorter route means the pirates will arrive faster, the action will be more concentrated, and the crowds will stack up earlier than usual. Translation. If you leave Brandon at the same time you normally would, you might arrive just in time to hear people say you should’ve been there already.

Land-side viewing spots like Davis Islands and Harbour Island may be your best bet this year, especially if you want to avoid wandering around downtown asking strangers where the pirates went.

Gasparilla is still happening. The parade is still on. The beads will still fly. It’s just a faster invasion with fewer chances to ease into the chaos.

The pirates may be taking a shortcut, but the traffic definitely isn’t.
