Pediatric specialists at Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital report a sharp rise in flu and RSV cases, with some illnesses showing up at double or even triple the levels seen this time last year. Emergency rooms are busier than usual, and more children are being admitted with symptoms like high fevers, persistent coughs, dehydration, and breathing difficulties.
Doctors say the surge is being fueled by a mix of holiday gatherings, travel, and kids spending more time indoors around others. While many cases can be treated at home, medical teams are urging parents to trust their instincts and seek care if symptoms worsen or don’t improve. The message is simple: wash hands often, keep sick kids home when possible, and don’t brush off symptoms just because it feels like “another cold.”
With winter still in full swing, doctors expect the wave of respiratory illnesses to continue, making the next few weeks an important time for families to stay cautious and proactive.
